Once you figure out your needs, you might go with ER, but you may never need it. Learning to remove and install R8 tooling with a bump of the power (NO WRENCH!) speeds things considerably. Quickchange tooling is more suitable for production situations. In my job shop, we had 8 vertical mills. All were strictly R8 tooled, no ERs or quickchange.

I just retrofitted a bridgeport v2e3 cnc mill that has the quick change spindle. My old mill had kwik switch 200 spindle so I needed all new tooling. I found NMTB 30 tooling, compatible with the erickson quick change system (on the bridgeport) very easy to find and cheap.

Nmtb30 Quick Change Tool Holders. To all those interested, I recently purchased some NMTB 30 tool holders through MSC. They are made by Accupro and priced from 47 57, in sizes from 3/16" to 1". The only issue I have found is the flange diameter is about .140" to large which can easily be ground down to fit the nose cap of the spindle. Steve.
